Chando Ao presents I'm a Fish (Installation), 2018 - ongoing in the Contemporary Artists Room

  • I'm a Fish is a robot fish tank that can move freely on land, with each movement of the fish directly influencing the tank’s direction. The core concept of this work is "movement". It explores multiple levels of mobility, including movement in physical space, bodily movement, and contextual shifts.

The fish's free movement in water is defined and translated into robotic language through image recognition technology, and the tank’s movement externalizes this shift. It serves as a metaphor for fluidity, allowing viewers to observe the connection between individual and the surroundings, as well as the symbiotic relationship we share with technology and nature.

This work is connected to the experiences of migrations in my life; my hometown Fengdu once lay along the Yangtze River.

In the work, I used the popular song "I'm a Fish" by Richie Jen, familiar to many in childhood, as an extended medium to evoke a shared emotional experience.
