Stanley and Stella in Breaking the Ice: an animated short created in 1987 by a crew of about 90 people from Symbolics Graphics Division (SGD), Whitney/Demos Productions, and elsewhere. It premiered at the Electronic Theater of SIGGRAPH 1987. One goal of the production was to showcase the “boids’ simulation of group motion, an early artificial life model. The boids model was developed in 1986 and 1987 and described in a technical paper published at SIGGRAPH 1987.

Boids Demo Reel: early 1986 motion tests of the boids model of flocking (and other group motion) and test sequences for the animated short “Stanley and Stella in Breaking the Ice.” It was developed on Symbolics Lisp Machines. Most of this video was re-recorded by simply pointing a consumer NTSC video camera at the screen of the Symbolics workstation.
